Root Canal Treatment FAQ

In the past, a damaged nerve almost certainly meant the loss of a tooth. Thanks to root canal treatment, however, a tooth can be saved from extraction.

What is root canal treatment all about ?

A tooth has pulp and a nerve contained within it. In the event of tooth decay the pulp will perish. Left unchecked infection may result and ultimately extraction of the affected tooth will be required. Caught early enough, root canal treatment can prevent the necessity of extraction. A dentist will be able to clean out any damaged or infected pulp, modify the root canal, seal it, strengthen the tooth and fit a crown.

Why is it necessary for me to have root canal treatment ?

A decaying tooth left without treatment will almost certainly lead to infection and the need to extract the tooth becomes necessary before more serious damage is done to gums and possibly bone. An abscess infection can form at the tooth root, this will most likely have to be treated with anti-biotic’s before the root canal treatment can take place. Having root canal treatment in time will maintain the use and strength of a tooth.

How should I choose a dentist to perform root canal treatment ?

All dentists will be trained in root canal treatment as it is a simple procedure, although the treatment can require up to three visits.

What are the common causes of pulp and nerve damage ?

Tooth decay is caused by bacteria in the mouth. The bacteria converts sugar into acid, this attacks the tooth enamel then in turn this attacks the pulp followed by the tooth nerve. Trauma to a tooth or teeth is also a common cause of damage. If there is a crack in a tooth due to trauma then this can give an access point for acid to enter.

Are there any symptoms to pulp nerve damage ?

Because the symptoms are similar to other dental conditions, you should consult your dentist for an accurate diagnosis. Symptoms can include swelling of the face and neck and tooth sensitively when eating or drinking hot or cold food or drink.

What is a “root canal” ?

The root canal of a tooth is the passage, in the tooth root, that blood vessels and nerves take to enter the pulp cavity.

What is involved in root canal treatment ?

Root canal treatment can require at least three visits to the dentist. The steps below will outline the progress of the procedure.

1. Access to the pulp chamber is made via the crown of the tooth.
2. The tooth pulp is removed.
3. The root canal or canals are cleaned, enlarged and shaped to accept the filling material.
4. The root canal may be treated with medication to eradicate any harmful bacteria.
5. Sometimes your dentist will place a temporary filling in the tooth while infection clears up.
6. The temporary filling, should there be one, is remove and the root canals are filled.
7. A crown is placed on the tooth, it is then shaped and polished

I have heard the term “endodontist” what is this ?

Dentists specializing in dental pulp diseases are called endodontists. Some procedures are more complex and are not usually handled by a general dentist. Your own dentist will advise you accordingly.

Will the tooth restoration last ?

There are some instances where a root canal treated tooth fails but on the whole it is usual for a restored tooth to last a life time. There are a number of reasons why a restored tooth fails but by adopting a strict and thorough oral hygiene routine and with regular check ups with your dentist, any potential problems will be spotted early.

Is root canal treatment risky ?

The risks from the procedure itself are negligible and no more risky than having a normal filling. It must be stressed that it is a matter of great importance to address a damaged or decaying tooth as soon as possible to prevent infection or to prevent the formation of an abscess. It can be gathered from this, that its more risky to not have root canal treatment should you have damaged or decaying teeth.

After root canal treatment, what do I need to know ?

As with any filling you will need to avoid eating for a few hours especially sticky chewy food stuffs. You may suffer some discomfort and swelling for a few days for which your dentists may advise pain killers or anti-inflammatory drugs. Your dentist will, most likely, want to see that all is well during your next check up. As mentioned before a strict oral hygiene routine and regular dental check ups will give your teeth the best chance in lasting you a life time.

Always seek the advice of a dentist if you have any concerns about your dental health.
