Cosmetic Dentistry – What Options Do You Have?

If you’re looking to enhance your teeth, current dentistry has plenty of options for you to choose from. You could whiten you teeth if you want something simple or you can do bridging and bracing. A few of these procedures are described below.

Teeth whitening

This procedure consists of the use of materials based on peroxide, which when applied on teeth will make them appear cleaner and whiter. To get the needed teeth enhancement, dentists will usually use either home based or in office methods of teeth whitening.

Before he actually starts to whiten teeth, the dentist will have to take care of the cavities that might exist, and he must make sure that the gums are in good condition. Next, he will try to protect the gums with a special system, while putting the gel on the teeth.

Continuing the process, an in office system will use a 35% peroxide liquid to continue whitening the teeth. The next step is the use of a laser to activate the peroxide, by oxidizing the stains from the teeth’s surface. It only takes an hour after that, for the teeth to become lighter.

The system used at home will only have a 20% concentration of peroxide. It will be used for around two weeks to whiten the teeth.

Both methods I described will work well to whiten teeth, but they’re best when you combine them.

Tooth-shaping

Taking around 30 minutes, the tooth shaping process is considered to be pretty basic. It consists of the reshape of teeth that have an undesired form. You can make a rounded tooth out of a pointed one, a short tooth out of a long one, or any other number of shapes. Removing a bit of the enamel from the teeth doesn’t have any effects in the long run.

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain wafers or veneers are other names for porcelain veneers. They are used to improve how the teeth look in the front, while hiding the damage. While they’re more conservative, they have the same effect as false teeth or dentures.

Resin (Fillings that are tooth colored)

You can use resins to make the appearance of teeth better for short periods of time. You can fix small cavities or chip with this procedure, by putting white filling in the places that need them. Unlike a veneer, a resin might discolor in time, so the natural look is not preserved.

Bonded-Bridge

When you have a missing tooth, you can replace it with a bonded bridge. You can use either a resin or porcelain tooth, with resin or metal wings on the sides. It works by removing a bit of enamel from the side of the teeth, so you can put the bonded bridge on the sides.

Gum-lifts

The gingivectomy or gum lifting removes a bit of gum, so it makes it look even, so the teeth look longer.

Braces

Orthodontics or braces can help young adults and children to fix the teeth gaps, making them more even. It takes around two years to fix this problem, with over twenty visits to the dentist.
